Living in a London Transport Double Decker Bus

This morning I took the opportunity to visit Rob & Sue who have been staying at Hongoeka Bay, Plimmerton here in NZ. They have been camping out in Robs Double Decker Bus. Rob purchased the bus from NZ Coach Services (Naenae) seven years ago. Since that time, the bus has been a labour of love requiring significant work to make it watertight and a cool place to live.

Rob and Sue’s bus parked up for the weekend in beautiful Hongoeka Bay.

Rob Pearce was originally from Opotiki, and his partner Sue Moore was from Invercargill. Nowadays they are based out of Paekākāriki on the Kapiti Coast, NZ. They are renting a parking spot in Paekākāriki from a friend, the location is very handy as Sue works in nearby Paraparaumu and Rob works for both Mary Potter Hospice and runs a hospitality business supplying staff for overseas entertainers.

Rob originally looked to import a Double Decker into the country but there were issues with New Zealand’s emission laws. Luckily, he came across this bus which was previously owned by NZ Coach Services.

Rob has spent hundreds of hours fitting out the bus with period furniture and making the vehicle a great living space. He still has work to do on a few things to get the Bus finalised.

“It took three years to make the Bus waterproof” explains Rob who mentions he had to learn several new skills on the journey to turn this old lady into something you can live in.

“The plan is to get the bus completely set up for our retirement years”. “The next big project is to find our own piece of land where we can set ourselves up for our senior years” Rob explains.

Well Rob, I personally think you have done an excellent job so far on this very cool Tiny Home project.

Buying a London Transport Double Decker bus.

It seems these popular big red buses are turning into extremely regular projects for many people around the world. The size is perfect to create a stunning Tiny Home and it takes just a google search to see other wonderful examples.

Why a Double Decker Bus?

PRICE, many have been purchased for less than 5000 pounds directly from London in the UK. The difficulty for people outside of the UK is being able to import them due to their high emissions and the subsequent restrictions in many countries.
